Entrance 7

We will continue with the relative sentences with prepositions and other types which we will now set out.

Let's start with relative sentences with prepositions. We must say that often relative sentences contain prepositions and a relative pronoun which is the object of the preposition. In everyday English the preposition is usually placed at the end of the relative sentence and the pronoun can be included or omitted. In formal English the preposition precedes the relative pronoun, and in this case the relative pronoun cannot be omitted.

    Everyday example:

Is that the woman you arrived with?

     Formal example:

Is that the woman you arrived with?

Furthermore, the relative pronoun can only be omitted when it is the object of the sentence. When the relative pronoun is the subject of the sentence, it cannot be omitted. Generally, you can tell when a relative pronoun is the object of the sentence because it is followed by another subject + verb.
